What is HIV/AIDS?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If it is not treated in time it turns into AIDS, which stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
HIV is non-curable so once you have it, you will have it for the rest of your life. Scientist hope to find a cure for it with daily research. However with the proper medical attention HIV can be controlled.
HIV affects specific cells of the immune system called T cells. Over time, HIV destroys so many of these cells that the body cant fight off infections nor diseases.
The only way to know for sure if you have HIV is to get tested.
How to lower the risk of getting HIV?
- Choose less risky sexual behaviors
- Use condoms consistently and correctly
- Get tested and treated for other sexually transmitted diseases(STDs) and encourage your partners to do the same.
- If your partner is HIV-positive, encourage your partner to get and stay on treatment.
